Everything you write down, in one tree that's yours.
Pimble keeps your notes, plans and references in stores on your own disk. It works without a network and without an account. When you want company, share a branch of the tree: everyone edits it at once, and every change merges.
Linux and Windows. Free and open source.
Three things have to land before the end of the year, in this order:
- Ship the new onboarding flow
- Close the two open roles (see Hiring)
- Move the team wiki out of the old tool
Dana and I are both in this note right now; our edits merge as we type.
| Job | Who | Quote |
|---|---|---|
| Roof | Ridgeline | $8,400 |
| Gutters | Ridgeline | $1,150 |
| Deck | Halvorsen | $5,900 |
Ridgeline can start the week of the 9th if we confirm by Friday.
An illustration, not a screenshot: two stores, a reading list mounted in both, and two notes side by side in split view.
A notebook shaped like your life, not like an app.
Projects, rooms of the house, people you keep notes about: whatever you keep, it goes in one tree you arrange yourself.
A tree you shape
Every note is a node in a tree you arrange by dragging. Give a row an icon and a color, tag it, and link one note to another by typing [[.
Stores on your own disk
A store is a folder you can see, back up and carry. Pimble opens it with or without a network, and it stays yours if Pimble someday doesn't.
Edits that merge
Two people, or two of your own devices, can write in the same note at once, or apart for months. The changes merge on their own; nothing locks and nothing is thrown away.
Mounts
Show any branch of any store inside another: the same notes, edited from either place, never a copy. A store on another server comes along and stays in step.
Split view
Up to four notes side by side, tiled however you like. Open the same note twice to write in one place while you read in another.
Search that keeps up
Results narrow as you type. Semantic search finds a passage by what it's about, even when you've forgotten the words, with a small model that runs on your machine.
Rich text, tables, pictures
Headings, lists, quotes, code, tables and pictures, every one of them co-editable. Paste or drop a picture straight into a note.
Canvases and markup
Sketch on an infinite canvas with pen pressure, shapes, sticky notes and connectors, or mark up a picture right where it sits in a note.
Bring your old notes
Import RTF files, Word documents and whole Scrivener projects, with their folders, labels and icons.
Share a branch, not a copy.
Share any note and everything under it with the people you choose, as editors or readers. They work in the same documents you do, on their own devices, and see each other's edits as they type. Nothing goes to Pimble Cloud unless you ask for it.
Hosted on Pimble Cloud
Host a store and every device and every member reaches it at any hour, from the desktop app or a browser.
Shared from your computer
Pimble Cloud only relays members' connections to your computer and stores nothing. While you're away, members' desktop apps keep working on their copy and catch up when you're back.
An LLM that edits like a collaborator.
Pimble comes with pimble-mcp, an MCP server for Claude and other LLM clients. Your assistant can search your stores, read notes and write to them, and its edits merge like another device's, even in the note you're typing in.
- It reaches what you can and nothing more: a read-only share stays read-only.
- An edit touches only the blocks it names, never the whole note.
- It runs on your machine. Hosted stores are reached through your own app, so your keys stay with you.
